Policies/Requirements

Mission Statement: Santa Monica High School believes that all students can learn at high levels, and we are willing to do what it takes to achieve success for each student.  Samohi also embraces four virtues of our motto “Sincerity, Maturity, Honor, and Service.”

Our highly competitive athletic programs are dedicated to fostering a positive and healthy culture, which centers around respect, sportsmanship, commitment to inclusiveness and diversity, hard work, self-discipline, humility, and social and emotional growth.

Attitude and Commitment: We are looking for athletes that are committed to the sport and are not afraid to work hard. SAMO HS competes in the toughest division in the country: Division 1 Southern Section.

CIF CODE OF ETHICS

Grading: We strive to teach accountability to our student athletes. A missed practice or meet without an email to Coach Fischer at least 24 hours in advance will result in a lowering of their grade. Practices run Mon-Fri p.6 from 2:30-4:30pm (5:30pm on Mon/Wed for weight room) Sat we have practices and/or meets. To raise the grade back up, the student must complete 2 hours of volunteer work at one of our meets or working with SMSA, our youth club. 18+ unexcused period absence results in suspended athletic participation.

Sickness/Injury: The health of the athlete is our number 1 priority. It is ultimately up to the coach whether a student can practice or compete. If you feel your child should not participate a doctor’s note is required.

GPA: All students must have a GPA of 2.0 or above to compete

Clearance: All students must have an up to date physical and get clearance from the nurse’s office. Use this link to obtain clearance: https://athleticclearance.com/. Also needed is the signed Opioid Policy sheet which you can download below:

Leaving a meet Early: The expectation is that the athlete will stay for the duration of the meet. If they leave early they must check out with a coach before they leave.

Uniform: New Uniforms can be purchased if you would like to keep them. They can be used for XC and track for all 4 years: https://santamonica.gearupsports.net/ . Loaners will be provided which must be returned at the end of each season.

Shoes: All athletes should have a good pair of running shoes for training. Spikes (Track) and Flats (XC) are recommended. We will have Spike Night once a season at Road Runner Sports in the beginning of the season for athletes to try on shoes.

TRACK REQUIREMENTS

Try Outs: We will be hosting All-Comers meets and a try out after school to help athletes make the standards for track.  The dates will be announced via Team Snap or posted on our website’s home page.  If you are using the all comers meets to try out, the admission fee will be waived or can be used as a donation to the team. Meet Dates: Dec 15, Jan 11, Feb 15.
