Requirements

Requirements

All Samohi student athletes must complete a full student athlete sports packet prior to any participation in any tryout, practice, and games. All required forms must be filled out in full with all necessary signatures and dates. Participating in the Athletic Program at Samohi also requires students to be academically eligible. In order to be eligible the student must have maintained a minimum 2.0 grade point average of a 4.0 scale in all enrolled courses during the previous grading period (per the California Interscholastic Federation – Southern Section Bylaws, Article 1 Section 205 Scholastic Eligibility). All paperwork can be downloaded and printed off the Samohi website.

To make track you have to pass these standards.

1. Practices are held everyday (Mon-Fri) for two hours (sometimes longer) as well as on Saturday if there are no meet scheduled. You are expected to attend ALL practices and meets unless you have worked it out with a coach at least ONE WEEK PRIOR to the days workout. Be aware of this commitment before you decide to join the XC team. Unexcused absences will be handled as follows:

a)Four (4) unexcused absences and you’re off the team.

b)We realize that everyone has conflicts. Email beforehand at least 24 hours in advance. This ONLY applies to conflicts on practices, NOT meets.

c)Do NOT have your friends or parents tell me that you won’t be at practice. If it’s important enough for you to miss practice, then YOU should tell a coach yourself.

d)If you are sick and not at school, send me an email at Tania Fischer If you are sick and go to school, you must still come to XC and check in.

2. Appropriate Behavior:

a) No drugs, alcohol or tobacco. If caught, you’re off the team for the rest of the season – don’t take the chance.

b) No Foul Language or derogatory terms.

c) Don’t use the word ‘can’t’.

d) You represent your school, teammates & coaches – do not embarrass anyone.
e) Obey the rules of the road while running on the streets.

3. Before – During – After Workouts.

a)Before ALL runs we warm-up, stretch and do our form drills.

b)Hydrate. Drink water and/or Gatorade before and after workouts.

c)We practice RAIN or SHINE, HOT or COLD. Dress accordingly.

4. Sports Pass: Everyone is required to purchase an Sports Pass through the Activities Center, on campus. Aside from all the benefits of having an Sports Pass, it helps fund our Cross Country and Track teams.

5. Keep your GPA up. You are a “STUDENT – Athlete”. A student first, athlete second. Minimum GPA is 2.0. Budget your time for homework. Our team take great pride in leading the campus with the highest GPA.

6. Fill out Roster. Name, address, phone #, etc.

7. Recruit! Get your buddies out to run with us. Last day do join XC is the Tuesday after Labor Day.

8. Commit! Club Soccer or Band is not an excuse to miss a Meet and/or a practice. Be aware that if you plan on doing either of these activities, they will conflict with our season. Your team mates are depending on you. Talk with me IN ADVANCE about how this might work. If you find that XC is not the sport for you, and want to change sports, you must tell me in person of your decision and turn in your uniform before I will release you to another sport or P.E. Be a responsible athlete (and person).

9. Prepare. Be at practice and meets on time and ready to go. Our time together is limited, be ready. Don’t waste our time.

10.Get your Parents involved: There are plenty of things your parents can do to come out and support the team which includes bringing snacks to meets for all the athletes, volunteering to help out at a meet, help set up team canopies, etc.

11. Have fun!

In addition to these requirements there are just a few costs involved that need to be pointed out.

Athletic Forms: Parents must turn in all athletic forms and $125.00 payable to Santa Monica High School -ASB to be able to compete. Information and forms can be found on the SAMO High website under athletics or you can click here for the page with all the information and forms.

Running Shoes: Each athlete needs a proper pair of running shoes. Running shoes typically last about 500 miles, our runners will average between 40-50 miles per week. Shoes should last 10-12 weeks. This is extremely important, without proper shoes runner risk the likelihood of various injuries. Most major shoe companies offer very reliable shoes. More experienced and/or Varsity runners should purchase a pair of racing flats. These are shoes designed for meets only. They are very light in weight and offer the best traction possible. These are usually inexpensive, around $35-$40. Unless you are very knowledgeable with the current shoe market we recommend buying shoes from a smaller specialty running store. This will insure a good stable shoe and proper fit. I recommend Top to Top (2621 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica) or Front Runners (11640 San Vicente Blvd. Los Angeles). They have knowledgeable staffs and I believe will give a 10% discount if you mention that you run for Santa Monica High.

Warm Ups: It is not mandatory but I would like each athlete to purchase a set of team warm-ups. These are $50.00 and can be purchased from Coach Fischer. In addition to allowing an athlete to warm-up properly and staying warm before and after races, they give the team a unified appearance.

Practice T-shirts with our logo will be offered at the beginning of the season for $10.00 through Coach Fischer. They are short sleeve cotton shirts with the SAMO XC logo on it. Again the tees are not mandatory but the kids like the shirts and again it gives the team a unified look.

Uniforms: Freshman purchase their own Meet Uniforms for $50.00 through Coach Fischer. Freshmen earn the right to wear a uniform after they have successfully completed their first race.
